BXB cattle breed ideal for Southern African beef production

The Braunvieh breed is highly suited for crossbreeding in Africa, providing advantages such as impressive milk production, high fertility, endurance, and easy calving. According to Lourens, these traits make the Braunvieh a strong choice for beef production. Brahmans also bring significant value to crossbreeding due to the hybrid vigor their offspring exhibit, especially in tough climates. When crossed, the two breeds produce the BXB, a versatile breed known for its remarkable growth rate, adaptability, and high-quality meat and milk production.

The BXB crossbreed, with its endurance and adaptability, has become popular across South Africa, including in regions like the Kalahari and Karoo, where cattle must adapt to challenging environments. Noted for its dark coat and distinctive white nose, the BXB matures early and maintains a calm temperament, making it a reliable choice for farmers in regions with extensive farming conditions, such as Namibia.

Andre Reitsma, a South African BXB producer, highlights that BXB weaners are highly valued by the feedlot industry due to their rapid growth and ease in ox production. Additionally, BXB heifers are popular as herd dams, thanks to their robust build and resilience. Both Braunvieh and Brahman breeds have excellent walking abilities, which is especially beneficial on large-scale farms where cattle often need to travel long distances to find grazing and water, adding to the BXB’s reputation as a reliable breed for African cattle farming.360
