Livetec Introduces Biosecurity Tool for Defra Poultry Reviews

Livetec has launched a new version of its electronic Biosecurity Assessment Tool (eBAS), making it freely available to poultry producers following the rollout of Defra-funded poultry biosecurity reviews. The reviews, introduced under the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway, provide eligible poultry keepers with practical, farm-specific guidance to strengthen biosecurity and reduce disease risks.

Helping producers prepare for biosecurity reviews

With disease prevention remaining a top priority for the poultry industry, robust biosecurity continues to be the first line of defence against infectious diseases. Livetec’s eBAS enables producers to evaluate their farm’s biosecurity measures before a veterinary review, helping them identify strengths, weaknesses and potential risk areas.

The digital assessment generates an overall biosecurity score, alongside individual scores for different biosecurity zones across the farm, providing a clear picture of where improvements may be required.

Supporting informed veterinary discussions

According to Julian Sparrey, Director at Livetec, the Defra-funded reviews offer an important opportunity for poultry businesses to reassess their disease prevention strategies.

“We’ve seen first-hand the impact disease outbreaks can have on farms, their animals and staff, and we strongly support Defra’s initiative,” Sparrey said.

He explained that completing the assessment before the veterinary visit enables producers to better understand their current biosecurity status.

“By completing a detailed biosecurity assessment ahead of the vet visit, producers can build a clearer picture of their existing biosecurity measures. eBAS highlights where businesses perform well while identifying vulnerabilities and areas that require attention,” he said.

The completed report can be shared with the reviewing veterinarian, allowing discussions to focus on practical improvements that will have the greatest impact.

A practical tool for continuous biosecurity improvement

Livetec emphasises that eBAS is designed to complement—not replace—professional veterinary advice. Instead, it provides both producers and veterinarians with a common starting point for developing targeted biosecurity action plans.

Part of the company’s Livestock Protect platform, the UK-focused assessment evaluates conceptual, structural and operational biosecurity. It examines factors such as farm location, infrastructure and daily management practices that influence disease risk.

By combining self-assessment with expert veterinary guidance, Livetec aims to help poultry producers strengthen farm resilience and improve disease preparedness through continuous biosecurity improvement.

Free access through the Livestock Protect app

The single-site version of the eBAS assessment is available free of charge through the Livestock Protect mobile app, allowing poultry producers to complete a comprehensive biosecurity review without subscribing to the full Livestock Protect platform.
