Food Prices in Egypt Show Decline in Poultry, Meat and Dairy

Recent data released on March 25 by the Information and Decision Support Center highlights a downward trend in the prices of key food items in Egypt, particularly in the poultry, meat and dairy sectors.

Poultry prices have eased slightly, with white chicken now selling at around EGP 101.5 per kilogram, reflecting a modest daily decrease of 0.6%. This decline is part of a broader market adjustment, likely driven by improved production efficiency and shifting consumer demand. As chicken remains a staple protein for many households, the price reduction offers some relief to consumers.

Beef prices have also followed a similar trend, declining by 0.6% to approximately EGP 410.8 per kilogram. Although the drop is small, it may help make beef more accessible to families looking to diversify their protein intake without significantly increasing their spending.

The seafood segment recorded a more noticeable shift, with tilapia prices falling by 3.4% to EGP 83.8 per kilogram. This sharper decline could encourage greater consumption of fish, particularly among health-conscious consumers seeking affordable and nutritious alternatives.

In the dairy category, packaged milk prices dropped by 3.8%, bringing the average cost to EGP 42.6 per litre. This decrease is especially beneficial for households, as dairy products are essential for daily nutrition across all age groups.

However, not all food items experienced price declines. Egg prices moved in the opposite direction, rising by 1% to EGP 143.2 per carton. This increase may be linked to supply fluctuations or seasonal demand patterns, particularly as more households prepare meals at home.

Overall, the latest price movements provide a snapshot of evolving food market dynamics in Egypt. While declines in several key categories offer some financial relief, rising prices in others highlight ongoing challenges in achieving consistent food price stability.
