A transformative poultry farming project in Tanzania is creating new opportunities for women, combining economic empowerment with improved local nutrition. Backed by international support from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), the initiative equips women entrepreneurs with the skills, tools, and resources needed to establish sustainable poultry enterprises. Beyond boosting household incomes, the program contributes to food security by increasing access to affordable, high-quality protein within local communities.
The project selected participants from the Tegeta area for intensive training covering all key aspects of poultry production. The women received instruction in flock management, balanced feeding, disease prevention, and hygiene standards critical for maintaining healthy birds. Importantly, the training extended beyond production techniques to include entrepreneurship, financial management, and marketing strategies — ensuring that beneficiaries are equipped to operate profitable and self-sustaining businesses.
With TIKA’s support, each participant received a comprehensive starter package containing essential equipment such as feeders, waterers, incubators, and quality feed. Infrastructure assistance, including storage facilities and modern cooling systems, was also provided to safeguard product quality and reduce post-harvest losses. These resources address common barriers faced by small-scale poultry farmers and significantly improve their prospects for long-term success.
One of the project’s most impactful components is the introduction of a dedicated distribution vehicle to transport eggs and poultry products to market. This logistical support reduces transport costs, maintains freshness, and enables access to broader customer bases.
