Deltamune and Urban Farmer Empower Africa’s Smallholder Poultry Farmers with Proudly Poultry Initiative

Across Africa, millions of small-scale poultry farmers are working tirelessly to feed their communities, yet many face steep challenges—limited access to finance, scarce technical knowledge, inadequate disease control, and poor farm management practices.

To help bridge this gap, Deltamune and Urban Farmer, with support from Phatisa, have partnered to launch the Proudly Poultry training series—a program designed to strengthen smallholder poultry farming and unlock its potential for food security and economic growth.

Complementary Expertise, Shared Vision

The strength of Proudly Poultry lies in the unique contributions of its two partners:

  • Urban Farmer equips producers with practical solutions for competitive poultry and livestock production. From feed, health, and hygiene products to hands-on training in nutrition, farm management, and animal health, their goal is to make safe, affordable, high-quality protein production a reality across Africa.

  • Deltamune, a biotechnology leader in veterinary and public health, brings its scientific expertise to the table. With vaccines and diagnostic solutions tailored for African conditions, the company ensures flocks are protected from local disease threats, boosting farm productivity and profitability.

Together, their combined expertise provides smallholder farmers with the tools, training, and confidence they need to thrive.

Building Skills, Changing Lives

Launched in 2023, Proudly Poultry has already delivered impressive results. Between July 2023 and September 2024, more than 1,500 farmers across six countries—Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Rwanda—were trained through 21 intensive workshops. These sessions combined theory with hands-on practice, from feed mixing using Urban Farmer’s U-MIX™ premixes to correct vaccine handling and administration.

But the journey doesn’t stop there. The program has now entered Phase II: “Train the Trainer.” This new phase focuses on creating a ripple effect of knowledge transfer by equipping trainers who can continue empowering farmers at the grassroots level. By working in smaller, more interactive groups, trainers ensure that skills stick and knowledge is applied effectively in real farming conditions.

Lasting Impact

So far, 3,850 farmers have been trained across both phases of the initiative—each one better prepared to manage their flocks, safeguard their livelihoods, and contribute to Africa’s growing food security.

For Deltamune and Urban Farmer, Proudly Poultry is more than a project—it’s a commitment to building a future where every farm has the chance to succeed, every flock is protected, and every community has access to safe, affordable poultry products.
