Togo’s poultry sector marked a significant milestone in 2024, with total production reaching 38.6 million birds—an 8% increase from the 35.7 million recorded in 2023. The figures, released by the Ministry of Economy and based on data from the Ministry of Livestock, are in line with the government’s earlier forecast of 38 million for the year.
The growth signals not only a strong recovery from past challenges but also an overall improvement in the efficiency, resilience, and scale of poultry farming across the country.
Plateaux Leads National Output
The Plateaux region led national production with 13 million birds, contributing nearly 34% of the country’s total output. This represents continued growth from the 12 million birds recorded in 2023, reinforcing the region’s role as a powerhouse in Togo’s poultry industry.
The Savanes region followed with a steady output of 8 million birds, maintaining the same level of production as in the past two years. Other regional contributions in 2024 included:
-
Central region: 6 million birds
-
Kara region: 5 million birds
-
Maritime region: 4.8 million birds
Outlook for 2025: Aiming for 41 Million
Looking ahead, government projections are even more ambitious, targeting over 41 million birds in 2025. This growth is part of a broader national strategy to build a sustainable and competitive poultry value chain, aimed at:
-
Enhancing food security
-
Creating employment opportunities
-
Stimulating rural economic development
Authorities remain optimistic, citing ongoing investments in livestock infrastructure, improved breeding techniques, and supportive policy frameworks as key drivers of the sector’s continued success.
