Nairobi, Kenya – June 10–12, 2025
The upcoming Regional Conference on the International Year of Camelids and Sustainable Livestock Transformation in Africa is set to bring together key stakeholders from across the continent to spotlight the vital role of camelids and sustainable livestock systems in Africa’s food security and economic development.
Co-hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), the three-day event will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme:
“Sustainable livestock systems; food security; improved livelihoods; and One Health.”
Why This Conference Matters
Africa’s livestock sector is undergoing transformation in response to climate change, population growth, and increasing demand for animal-source foods. Among the most resilient and underutilized species in this transformation are dromedary camels, which are particularly important for communities in arid and semi-arid regions.
This conference will serve as a platform to:
-
Raise awareness about the value of camelids in achieving food and nutritional security,
-
Showcase innovations and traditional knowledge in camelid husbandry,
-
Promote policies for sustainable livestock development,
-
Encourage investments in livestock systems aligned with climate resilience and One Health goals.
Key Highlights
-
Expert-led discussions on national and regional livestock strategies,
-
Success stories and innovations from camel-keeping communities across Africa,
-
Opportunities for collaboration between governments, private sector, researchers, and development agencies,
-
A dedicated exhibition showcasing camelid products, technologies, and community practices in celebration of the International Year of Camelids.
This timely conference supports the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation and is expected to catalyze new partnerships and policies that will uplift millions who depend on livestock for their livelihoods.
