In the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, a new generation of poultry farmers is emerging—confident, capable, and ready to build a future with chickens at the centre of their success stories.
Thanks to a dynamic poultry training programme supported by the World Poultry Foundation (WPF) and delivered through the KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute (KZNPI), young people—most with zero farming background—are now producing broilers, improving household nutrition, and generating income.
And here’s the best part: over 70% of these new farmers are women.
From Beginners to Business Owners
Ten young farmers recently completed an intensive hands-on training course in broiler production. Despite having no prior experience, each participant successfully raised and managed their first flock—proving that with the right support, anyone can thrive in agriculture.
But the impact goes beyond the coop.

One participant proudly reduced chick mortality from 10% to 6% by applying simple biosecurity and care techniques.

Another has drawn up plans to expand from one broiler unit to three full-scale chicken houses in just one year.
Their stories are proof that agricultural training isn’t just about chickens—it’s about confidence, business skills, and long-term independence.

“I used to think I had nothing to offer. Now I raise chickens, make money, and help feed my family. I’ve found my purpose.”
